In Nigeria today, hawking has predominantly become not an utterly new in our consortium and is currently one of the most prevalent causes of the accelerating caliber in poor performance of the students in schools since it creates room for lack of seriousness and interest in school work, poor memory, learning difficulty and under achievement.
As a developing nation, if there is a need for Nigeria to cultivate and harvest young adults with sound education, high self esteem and great capacity required for the social, political and economic development to sustain the country in the future, then there is no any better time than now. But all seem to be carelessly abondoned as the future of the tomorrow leaders is ceaselessly ruined and mislead.
Hawking according to the Oxford advanced learners Dictionary, is moving to sell things by going from place to place asking for people to buy them. This practice normally by children of school ages which includes both males and females goes from morning to evening in most cases. The girls usually moves from house to house or motorparks selling boiled/fried groundnuts, boiled eggs, raw fish contained in a tray balanced on their head. The boys also used to sell second hand clothes, raw meat, sugar canes and others pushing in the wheel barrows.
This situation is ofcourse affecting the children's schooling and more specifically their developmental stages because teenagers who shares the school time with street hawking are always late to school and are tend to develop immaturities in school work which may include poor studying habits, lack of reading and writing skills, low self esteem and low performance in class hence resulting in failure or total dropping out of school.
Moreover, some parents in towns and cities withdrawn their children from school in order to send them hawking so as to make more money as to help with the family's daily bread. Some times the children are even dropped out from school for a term or even a whole year. The search for peacon in a depressed economy is obviously one of the major reasons why the parents and guardians send their children or wards to hawk.
Most of the hawkers are either in primary or secondary school for the purpose of hawking and at each day sales, the children becomes weak and tired that they arrived late to school and unable to concentrate in class, contribute to discussion or study on their own.
Apparently, parents and guardians do not realize that hawking make their child dull in terms of school performance and the teenagers on the other hand, don't know that the means by which mental, moral and material heritance is transmitted from generation to generation is through formal education.
Therefore, both the community should be appraise and be cautious of the effect hawking caused to the young ones.
